with pictures and colors) into the "junk" folder.
These days, Outlook blocks all emails containing HTML and
graphics by default.

Here are the reasons why "the death of email" is happening right
before our eyes:
There's Too Much Spam. Ironport Systems
reports that more than 62 billion emails were sent each day by spammers in the
month of October 2006.. that totals 1.9 TRILLION spam emails in one month
alone.
Spam email is an annoyance. Everyone is
overloaded with it and it's only getting worse. I personally receive over
300 spam emails a day from people that I don't know. It's gotten so bad that
even my customer email receipts are being sent to the spam folder. That annoys
me, annoys my customers. and ultimately hurts my business. Is your business
suffering in ways you may not even realize because of spam?
Too Much Sexually Explicit Spam. Have you
read the email subject lines lately? WOW! So much of the spam email
subject lines are so graphic that I refuse to open my email messages around my
kids. That's how bad things have gotten. So ask yourself this: do you
really want your marketing message to show up right next to the sexually
explicit "performance enhancer"?
You Can't Turn Spam Off. You can try changing email
addresses but of course you wouldn't be able to communicate with the people you
really want to hear from. Let's face it. If someone knew how to get rid
of spam, they would have invented it already, you would have heard about
it. Unfortunately as long as you have an email address, you're going to
continue to get barraged daily with spam email. And the problem is only
going to get worse.
Emails Trigger Spam Filters. You must be
careful what you say in an email message because any word can trigger your
reader's spam filter. When that happens, your email message ends up in
the "junk" or "spam" folder.
Email is No Longer "Rich Media". Online
marketers have learned to no longer include HTML or graphics in their emails
because it increases their odds of getting the email placed in the "junk" or
"spam" folder. HTML Graphics are Blocked. According to
Epsilon Interactive, "65 percent of U.S. email with images embedded
in the mail initially arrive with the images broken." Many email clients like
Outlook Express automatically disable graphics from being displayed in the
email message. You literally have to go out of your way to download and view
email graphics. That means your readers are not experiencing the full "rich
media" experience you're trying to send to them. Instead, they're looking at an
email message with big blocks of blank space!
Phishing scams are on the rise.
Phishing is the practice of sending phony emails that appear to be
from legitimate companies. The goal: trick you into giving up private data such
as credit card numbers, passwords, and other sensitive personal details. In
2006, more than 109 million U.S. adults received a phishing email. Of those,
more than 24 million clicked thru the email message. Of those that clicked on a
phishing message, more than 3.5 million mistakenly gave their personal,
sensitive information. Average loss per victim: $1,244!

While you're sending emails to build trust with your readers,
fewer and fewer of your readers are trusting your emails.
Okay, you may be saying, "Enough already! I agree with you!"
But we've only scratched the surface of the problem.
